Origins of the Manor House Can Ferran
In 1714, during the War of Succession, Ramon de Rialp i de Safor, born in 1670, was a lieutenant colonel of the Regiment of Cavalry in the Austrian troops (the supporters of Archduke Charles of Austria for the Spanish crown) and went into exile in Vienna after the victory of Philip V and before the Decree of Nueva Planta. There, he passed away after making a will in favor of his son.
The lineage of the Penedès branch of the Rialp family is said to have begun in the early 14th century. King Jaume the Just rewarded Guillem Bernat de Rialp with significant properties in the Alt Penedès region after he accompanied Prince Alfons, the firstborn son of the King, on the first expedition organized to conquer the island of Sardinia, where they arrived on June 12, 1323.
In 1830, Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry Miquel de Rialp Llorens carried out significant renovation works on the “Casa Gran” (Big House) of Puigdàlber and the “Casa Petita” (Small House), unifying them under one single façade. He settled there, and in royal recognition of Ferdinand VII, he christened the house with the name Can Ferran.
